For the past seven years the Boston Midnight Marathon Bike Ride has gathered an increasing number of cyclists the night before the prestigious Boston Marathon. The bike ride begins for most riders at the start line of the race in Hopkinton, MA 26.2 miles away from the symbolic marathon's finish line. The limitations to access Hopkinton with bicycles using public transportation has logistically challenged the organizers, this year, the riders took the commuter rail but bicycles were transported in trucks.
Some other riders, like myself, decide to ride our bicycles to Hopkinton and back to the finish line, a 52.4 miles journey that starts at 9 pm and ends with a breakfast around 4:00 am. This was my first time participating in the event, it was a personal challenge and concluded at 2:00 am after my arrival at the marathon's finish line.
The event is not a race, anyone can join free of cost thanks to the hard work of bostonsos.org, sponsors and volunteers, all you need to do is sign up to participate.
This event has a special meaning for Boston residents and for those who love this city, not only because it demonstrates the spirit of resilience and camaraderie, but also because it creates awareness toward a more bike-friendly city.
